CST112 Project 12: Chapter 10

"The Final Project"

• In this Final Project you will create your own game or other animation based upon the following instructions:
   
  • This is an "open-ended" application which should be completed using algorithmic design, classes, objectsand arrays; you should be creating a new animation or game of your own design (do not build on something from past assignments); as before your figures may bounce off the output window walls, jump up and down, or whatever else you choose; additionally you should manipulate other properties of your animated figures and/or the output window environment
     
  • For full credit, 10 out of ten points, invent a creative game or other applicaton that provides for some interaction between the animation and the user, some action as a result of the intersection between two or more objects, and instantiation of new objects based on either user interaction (mouse pressed or key pressed) or the ellapsed time of a "Timer" object
     
  • Follow the approach recommended for algorithmic development specified in the chapter; break down the idea into smaller parts, each one using object-oriented design and then bring all the parts together; at least one of the objects should implement an array
     
  • You may determine the size of the output window dependent upon the requirements of the application you choose to complete
     
  • The more creative/unique (different from the "Asteroids" game we created in class) the nature of your game or animation, the higher a grade you will receive
     
  • The more similar to the "Asteroids" game, the lower the grade will be

    The following point reductions will apply:

    • A three (3) point reduction will apply if you are not able to implement intersection between objects (an animation that would be similar to "Project 11")
    • A one (1) point reduction will apply if you are able only to implement intersection between objects of the same class
    • A one (1) point reduction will apply if you are not able to implement dynamic object instantiation (new objects are instantiated and/or activated based upon a user action and/or a timer)
       
  • The "Asteroids" game which we developed in class is a good example of the type of functionality that should be build into your sketch; click this Play Asteroids link to view the application, although this is just an example since your assignment is to create something completely different; also to give you additional ideas, here also is the same "Asteroids" game using images for the background and rocks (asteroids) (Play ImagesAsteroids)
     
  • A sample game using a bow and arrows plus apples was introduced in class which you could use if you had no other ideas but which is not the required assignment.  In this game the bow is similar to the rockets in the "Asteroids" game, the arrows are like the bullets and the apples are like the rocks.  The bow is moved up and down on one side of the screen by a user with keyboard keys.  When a key is pressed or the mouse is clicked, a new arrow is shot from the bow.  Apples on the other side of the screen are moving up and down.  New apples appear when a timer 'fires'.  When the tip of an arrow hits an apple, it disappears.  An application with this functionality might be worth 8½ to 9 points.
     
  • Insert comments at the beginning of all program files for the assignment project number, your name and e-mail address, the date of submission, and a brief description of what the program does; additionally comment each of the sections of code, including a comment at the beginning of each of the programmer-defined functions and methods

• Students may work on all projects in teams of two or three, and, if so, all students in the group must submit the same project to their own dropboxes in Blackboard.  In the text box's dropbox, as well as in the source code documentation (comments), state the name(s) of the classmate(s) with whom you worked.
   
• The completed project archived into a ".ZIP" file submitted electronically via an attachment to a Brightspace dropbox is due to Prof. Struck no later than 11:59 p.m. on the date listed in the course outline.
